The Library-in-a-Box (LIAB)
Providing access to books and encouraging reading and critical thinking amongst primary and senior high school children in Ghana.
IMPACT
The “Library-in-a-Box” (LIAB) project, initiated in 2017, aims at providing access to books and encourages reading and critical thinking amongst primary and senior high school children in Ghana. Other key actions include; provision of library log books which fosters better organization and accountability as well as advocacy in schools to initiate reading clubs and allocate time for reading to build the reading culture.
The Challenge: Only 38% of primary 2 children in Ghana can read.
Our Strategy
01.
Assessment of Book Requests
We begin by analyzing specific book requests received from schools and communities to understand reading material demands and preferences. This helps tailor library content to actual learning needs.
02.
Selection of Beneficiary Schools
Schools are selected based on a comprehensive needs assessment that considers resource limitations, student population, and learning outcomes. Priority is given to underserved and marginalized institutions.
03.
Curation of Books based on identified gaps.
Books are curated to address curriculum needs, literacy levels, and subject gaps identified during assessments. A balance of textbooks, storybooks, and reference materials ensures holistic learning support.
04.
Packing of Books into Trunks for Distribution
Books are systematically packed into durable trunks, creating mobile mini-libraries. Each trunk is organized for ease of access and transportation to beneficiary schools.
05.
Provision of Library Log Books for Monitoring and Evaluation
Each library-in-a-box is accompanied by a log book to track usage, monitor reading patterns, and support periodic evaluation. This data informs future interventions and continuous improvement.
