Skills and Entrepreneurial Development Initiative (SEDI)
Empowering women through training, capital, and startup kits, enhancing socio-economic well-being.
IMPACT
The SEHP Skills and Entrepreneurial Development Initiative (SEDI) empowers women through training, capital, and startup kits, enhancing socio-economic well-being.
It has trained 5,700 women in various phases and supported 2,256 young women under the BIZBOX project, focusing on entrepreneurship for apprentices in trades like dressmaking and hairdressing. Additionally, 2,100 women were trained in yogurt making, and 1,300 women gained soap-making skills across Ghana.
Partnering with agencies like NEIP, SEDI trains women in financial management and business resilience. So far, 71 women and 70 traders have received loans and training, fostering sustainable entrepreneurship post-COVID.
The Challenge
1.9 million of Ghana’s youth aged 15-35 classified as “Not in Education, Employment, or Training” by the Ghana Statistical Service. Of this group, 1.2 million are females. The country faces systemic challenges in health, education, and gender equity, particularly among vulnerable populations. The realities of multidimensional inequalities compel us to design culturally responsive, community-led interventions that are both practical and scalable
Our Strategy
Identification of Beneficiaries
We employ a participatory and data-driven selection process to identify beneficiaries across target communities, prioritising youth, women, and vulnerable groups with limited access to economic opportunities.
Identification of Trainers
We collaborate with industry professionals, vocational experts, and certified training institutions to ensure high-quality instruction. Trainers are selected based on technical competence, teaching experience, and alignment with the objectives of the initiative.
Provision of Training
Beneficiaries undergo hands-on, competency-based training tailored to identified local economic opportunities. The training modules incorporate practical skills, business development knowledge, and financial literacy. This is delivered through field demonstrations.
Provision of Start-Up Kits
Upon successful completion of the training, beneficiaries receive start-up kits relevant to their skill area. These kits are designed to support immediate application of acquired skills and serve as a launchpad for small-scale enterprises.
Monitoring and Evaluation
We adopt a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to track progress, assess impact, and inform continuous improvement. Key indicators include training completion rates, enterprise establishment, income growth, and employment generation. Follow-up visits and beneficiary feedback are integral to our accountability and learning processes.
