Safe Delivery Project

With women’s reproductive health a priority at SEHP, the Safe Delivery Project was developed and implemented to support the reduction of maternal and neo-natal mortality rates across Ghana. Successfully piloted across twenty-two (22) communities in the East Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region, SEHP through a network of community institutions, midwives, traditional birth attendants, community elders, and volunteers, provided 6000 expectant mothers in their third trimester with birth kits containing essential supplies for sterile and safe deliveries, as well as after-birth care. Over the last two years, 226 community-based health surveillance personnel, 64 health workers and 150 traditional birth attendants have been trained in health communication and safe delivery practices within the municipality. 

The East Gonja Municipal Health directorate at the end of 2020 recorded:

• a reduction in Institutional Neonatal Mortality Rate to 0.9 per 1,000 live births from 1.3 per 1,000 live births in 2017; 

• zero (0) institutional maternal mortality; 

• an increase in new-borns receiving post-natal care from 58.4% in 2018 to 66.7%;
• an uptake of antenatal care coverage by 158%
